Increase access to sustainable sanitation services in Ghana

The African Water Facility is in the process of preparing feasibility studies and engineering designs for delivery of sustainable faecal sludge management (FSM) infrastructure  and services in 12 cities and secondary towns in Ghana. Contract award for the Consultancy Services to prepare the studies and designs is due in June 2022.

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to increase access to safe, sustainable and inclusive sanitation services, with improved hygiene and faecal sludge management (FSM) services for people living in small and medium size urban centres in Ghana.

The project’s direct beneficiaries are the urban dwellers, municipalities, town councils, and sector ministries. With realization of the downstream investments, the direct beneficiaries would be the (a) initial 917,650, and subsequently by 2030, the 1,084,259 urban dwellers in small and medium urban centres. The study  will likely contribute to  the creation of about 200 new jobs following realization of the downstream investments. « Toilet access in most cities and towns is deplorable, and progress to improve toilet access has  been slow. Only about 5% of the total population has access to sewerage systems. That means that  most people rely on domestic and public sanitation facilities of variable  quality, as well as open defecation».

The project is based on feasibility studies, engineering designs and project management activities. The studies will inform preparation of investment and implementation  plans to facilitate  future investments.
