Malagasy decision-makers and experts in the sanitation sector participated, since Monday, October 4, 2021, in a capacity-building workshop on new urban sanitation techniques in Tulear.
During five days, participants will review solid waste management techniques, the legal and regulatory framework of the sanitation sector in Madagascar as well as aspects related to public-private partnerships.
The capacity building session is part of the activities of the project for the Development of Sewerage Master Plans for eight secondary cities in Madagascar (SDAUM) that the African Water Facility is funding in this country since 2016. The project aims also to provide the eight secondary cities in Madagascar with Urban Sanitation Master Plans (SDAU) and bankable projects based on the Integrated Water and Waste Management approach. Activities are currently underway to mobilize resources for priority sanitation projects. The project ends at the end of this year.
During the opening ceremony, Adam Amoumoun, the Representative of the African Development Bank in Madagascar said that this training is very useful for actors in the sanitation sector in Madagascar.
“We hope that these techniques will be used for the effective implementation of the national sanitation strategy” he added.
Madagascar has placed the water and sanitation sectors at the heart of its development priorities. Amoumoun said that the Bank reiterated to the Malagasy authorities its commitment to support them.
“We all know how vital the development of the water and sanitation sector is. The African Development Bank, through the African Water Facility is proud to participate in this joint effort to provide better living conditions to populations, especially the most vulnerable " said the Representative of the Bank.
The training will end on Friday, October 8, 2021. A consultant specialist in institutional support in the application of the legal and regulatory framework of the WASH sector at the regional and national level and the NGO Welthungerhilfe (WHH) lead these capacity building sessions.
The NGO Welthungerhilfe has a proven experience in urban sanitation in Madagascar and in Africa.
