Reducing food insecurity, flooding and droughts in Uganda and South Sudan.

November 2014 – The Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP) has received a €1.97 million grant to increase water availability for multiple purposes in the Nyimur region of Uganda and South Sudan. The grant will support the improvement of irrigated agriculture and food production, fisheries, electricity generation and sanitation as well as the prevention of flooding and droughts in the region.

Development of irrigated agriculture to increase food security and economic growth in Malawi

December 2013 - The Government of Malawi received a €1.8 million grant to help prepare a project to expand irrigated agriculture in the Lower Shire Valley. The project will help overcome the adverse effects of prolonged dry spells and frequent flooding, improve and spread agricultural production, as well as create employment opportunities through farming and irrigation ventures. The grant will be used to finance a feasibility study and preparatory activities to mobilize funding for an irrigation plan covering 21,000 hectares.

Integrated watershed management of Kiboun and Tende River basins

January 2009 - The Government of Kenya received a €1.9 million to improve the productivity and sustainability of land use systems and water conservation by empowering local communities and government agencies institute improved management of Kibuon and Tende river basins. The project will help improve water quality and quantity through the promotion of sustainable agricultural and land use practices in the catchments, leading to the reduction in nutrient and sediment transport into the water courses.

Study to upscale smallholder irrigation in Zambia

A new set of studies, financed by a grant of EUR 1.4 million from the African Water Facility (AWF) will help develop smallholder irrigation in Zambia, through the Upscaling of Smallholder Irrigation Project. This will lead to improved livelihood conditions and climate change resilience of smallholder farmers in the country.

Boosting hydropower and irrigation in Tanzania

Tanzania is expected to benefit from a boost in hydropower generation and irrigation development thanks to a new study financed by the African Water Facility (AWF). This EUR 2-million grant will help the government of Tanzania launch the pre-feasibility study of a multipurpose dam, irrigation and hydropower project in Kikonge (South West).

Preparation of improved water control and management systems for Pandamatenga area

June 2007 - The Government of Botswana received a €1.2 million grant to support a project aimed at improving water control systems on an area of 27,574 hectares to improve water logged conditions arising from the characteristics of the predominant black cotton soil of the area. This will lead to increased cereal production as a result of improved water control infrastructure and agricultural water management.

Niger Basin – multipurpose infrastructure to adapt to climate change

December 2013 – The Niger Basin Authority received a €1.5 million grant to conduct feasibility studies for infrastructure aimed at adapting to climate change. The AWF will also catalyse investments through supporting technical, economic, financial, environmental and social feasibility studies. 137 million people are expected to benefit from this project.
