August 2010 - The Water Resources Commission (WRC) of Ghana received a € 1.8 million grant to finance the Akosombo and Kpong Dams reoptimisation and reoperation study. The purpose of the project is to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of a technique for reoptimising the operations of the Akosombo and Kpong hydropower dams to reintroduce (or at least improve or enhance) downstream livelihoods and ecosystems, while maintaining, and indeed enhancing, power generation output and reliability.

The implementation of an Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM) Masterplan will help Marondera city of Zimbabwe reach universal access to drinking water and sanitation by 2025. The design of Marondera’s IUWM masterplan is supported by a EUR 2 million grant from the African Water Facility (AWF) with a view to ensuring sustainable management of water and sanitation services for the region’s population.

The African Water Facility (AWF) supports improvements in the provision of drinking water in Morocco with the approval of a EUR 815,100 grant. Close to 390,000 persons spread over 31 municipalities will benefit from this initiative, thanks to the El Borouj, Larache and Safi North West projects in the country’s northern region.

A new set of studies, financed by a grant of EUR 1.4 million from the African Water Facility (AWF) will help develop smallholder irrigation in Zambia, through the Upscaling of Smallholder Irrigation Project. This will lead to improved livelihood conditions and climate change resilience of smallholder farmers in the country.

December 2006 - The Government of Senegal received a €935,000 grant to support the preparation of a Master Plan for the improvement of sanitation services in different districts of Zinguichor, solve the environmental issues generated by wastewater management, eradicate the impacts of severe floods created by anarchic rains, and advocate in favor of new technologies for water supply and sanitation.

Background: In 2012 Sierra Leone experienced a rather severe outbreak of cholera, affecting over 5,000 people with 63 deaths in the Western Area from January to August 2012. The outbreak brought into sharp focus the magnitude of the task at hand of making safe clean water accessible to the people.

December 2006 -The Government of Rwanda received a € 450,000 grant to support a project intended to introduce rainwater harvesting techniques for agriculture and livestock use, as well as to supply drinking water for human consumption in rural districts of Rwanda. This pilot scheme will also make it possible to popularize and scale up the techniques for rainwater harvesting throughout areas in the country which frequently suffer from the effects of drought.

May 2007 - The Network for Water and Sanitation, Uganda (NETWAS-U) received a €450,000 grant to conduct education, sensitization activities to promote roof rainwater harvesting (RWH) to provide relief to the most water stressed parts of the country through the implementation of this low cost solution. The system will provide safe water to the households for a period that will extend beyond the dry spells with aim to secure water supply all year round.

October 2012- The ONG PROTOS has received a € 1 million grant to finance the development of an institutional framework for the decentralization of water supply, sanitation, hygiene services in the Atacora-Donga region. This project includes capacity building of communes and the private sector and technical assistance offered to municipalities. The project is expected to help improves water supply, sanitation, hygiene services in the targeted region, and improve people’s health and living conditions.
