Integrated water resources management

November 2014- The Government of Somalia has received a €3-million grant to support a project designed to build resilience to climate change and reduce water stress in Somaliland. The AWF grant will support the preparation of a water resources management and investment plan.

January 2010 - The Government of Mali received a €2 million grant to put in place an appropriate framework to improve water knowledge, develop useful tools in order to ensure a better allocation of resources among users, and increase national capacities related to management and exploitation of resources.

Victoria, Seychelles – The Government of Seychelles has received a €1.07 million grant for the development of an Integrated Comprehensive Sanitation Plan for the islands. The 10 year plan will follow an integrated approach, looking at the synergies with related sectors such as waste, energy, water supply and stormwater. It will also promote innovative water re-use technologies. A diagnostic study of the sanitation sector of the Seychelles will be conducted which will include economic, environmental and societal impact assessments.

April 2010 - The Government of Gambia received a €2 million grant to finance the implementation of national water sector reforms. The project aims at supporting the introduction of a supportive legal and institutional environment for integrated water resources management (IWRM), developing IWRM strategies, and strengthening and improving data and information systems. This will also facilitate provision of water supply and sanitation at country level in order to achieve the MDGs as well as the African Water Vision.

(In French Only) Kinshasa est une ville qui connaît un taux de croissance démographique élevé (5 %) dont la population estimée à près de 10 millions d’habitants en 2014, est estimée entre 14 et 17 millions en 2030. Bien que la ville soit construite au bord du fleuve Congo, l’approvisionnement en eau potable (AEP) se fait à partir de plusieurs petites rivières et des eaux souterraines dans quelques quartiers périphériques. Le système de distribution est principalement assuré par la REGIDESO avec un taux global de desserte en eau potable de 64 %.

(In French only) Huit villes vont être dotées de plans d'investissement pour l'assainissement à Madagascar, grâce à un don de 1,8 million d’euros. L’objectif est de renforcer le développement économique et social de ces villes grâce à des programmes d’actions pour la gestion intégrée des eaux pluviales, des excreta, des eaux usées et des déchets solides. Les zones concernées (Toliara, Taolagnaro, Antsirabe, Toamasina, Nosy-Be, Fianarantsoa, Mahajanga et Antsiranana) regroupent 1,6 million d’habitants.

January 2011 – The Government of Tunisia received a € 1 million grant to develop a national water vision and strategy to ensure the proper management of the country’s water resources up to 2050 and increase water security. This project will help the government make informed and guided decision about water investments and projects across the country.

The implementation of an Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM) Masterplan will help Marondera city of Zimbabwe reach universal access to drinking water and sanitation by 2025. The design of Marondera’s IUWM masterplan is supported by a EUR 2 million grant from the African Water Facility (AWF) with a view to ensuring sustainable management of water and sanitation services for the region’s population.

September 2006 - The Government of Burundi received a €480,000 grant to formulate Burundi’s Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) plan meant to help the country achieve a sustainable water resource management regime contributing to social equity, economic efficiency and environmental sustainability. The Global Water Partnership (GWP) was a facilitator of the project at the request of Burundi's Government. GWP is an international partnership with the mission to support the development of national IWRM plans.

In order to manage water fairly, sustainably and efficiently, the African Water Facility (AWF) has approved a grant of 1.4 million euros to Tunisia. This donation will be used to implement the project entitled “Development of the vision and strategy of the water sector by 2050.” This project will take an integrated management approach on resources to contribute to the country’s socioeconomic development.
