Ziguinchor sanitation master plan study

Greater Freetown: Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan and Investment Studies

Background: In 2012 Sierra Leone experienced a rather severe outbreak of cholera, affecting over 5,000 people with 63 deaths in the Western Area from January to August 2012. The outbreak brought into sharp focus the magnitude of the task at hand of making safe clean water accessible to the people.

Capacity building for decentralized integrated water resources management (IWRM)

April 2008 - The Government of Burkina Faso received a € 450,000 grant to strengthen the Government’s institutional capacity and performance for monitoring water resources and water use in the country and developing adequate regulation for the effective implementation of Burkina Faso's IWRM Plan. The IWRM is part of the Government’s plan to boost water security issues through improved management and development of its water resources.

Feasibility and design study of storm water drainage and solid waste management systems in Ouagadougou

April 2008 - The Government of Burkina Faso received a €642,000 grant to conduct a feasibility study for the improvement of sanitation services in the peripheral areas of Ouagadougou where live the most underprivileged citizens, as a way to improve their health and hygiene conditions, and safeguarding the environment. The project will seek to attract investments to finance the sanitation infrastructure and services proposed.

Support for the decentralisation of the water, sanitation and hygiene services in Atacora-Donga region

October 2012- The ONG PROTOS has received a € 1 million grant to finance the development of an institutional framework for the decentralization of water supply, sanitation, hygiene services in the Atacora-Donga region. This project includes capacity building of communes and the private sector and technical assistance offered to municipalities. The project is expected to help improves water supply, sanitation, hygiene services in the targeted region, and improve people’s health and living conditions.
