Supporting multi-purpose water storage to build climate resilience in Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique, – The AWF announced on December 15 that is has offered a €3.4 million grant to the Government of Mozambique to conduct a feasibility study for the development of a climate adaptation project in the lower Limpopo region. This project will include building infrastructure to protect the Limpopo basin from floods and droughts and will increase food security by boosting agricultural production. Furthermore, the infrastructure to be built could lead to hydro-electric power production for the region.

Improving Mozambique’s resilience to climate change and reducing vulnerability to floods

The African Water Facility (AWF) grants €1,8 million to Mozambique to finance a development plan and feasibility studies for urban sanitation, drainage and solid waste management in Chimoio and Inhambane. The 310,000 inhabitants of the two municipalities are facing serious sanitation and urban flood issues.

The African Water Facility Supports Mozambique’s resilience to climate change and reducing vulnerability to floods in Inhambane and Chimoio

The Government of the Republic of Mozambique and the African Water Facility (AWF) has entered into a grant agreement for a feasibility study on Urban Sanitation, Drainage and Solid Waste Management in Chimoio and Inhambane. The grant agreement was signed on 27th January 2017 by the Minister of Economy and Finance Adriano Afonso Maleiane and the Country Manager for the African Development Bank Joseph M. Ribeiro.The project was launched in workshops in Maputo on March 8, in Chimoio on March 9 and another one will be held in Inhambane on March 14.
