Bankable Project & Development Programme

January 2012 – The Government of Sudan received a € 3.3 million grant to finance the preparation of bankable investment plans to leverage the US $100 million in financing required to meet the medium and longer term water and sanitation needs of the inhabitants in 15 to 20 small rural towns in Darfur, as well as neighbouring pastoralists and nomadic peoples.

April 2012 - The Government of Cape Verde has received a € 1.4 million grant to finance a study that will look at ways to better mobilise and store surface water resources through the construction of dams. The grant will also be used to strengthen the legal framework for integrated water resources management. This will help Cape Verde deal with increased water pressure on the groundwater resources, and build water security for all uses.

July 2007 - The Government of Congo has received a €1.4 million to finance an institutional and technical analysis and prepare priority works for water supply, sanitation, storm water drainage and solid wastes management in Brazzaville and Pointe Noire to meet MDG 2015 and the African Water Vision targets.

August 2007 - The Government of the Central African Republic has received a €1.4 million grant to support a water supply and sanitation study and priority investment project preparation for the 16 district capitals of RCA. The study will help diagnose the country’s water supply and sanitation access gaps to plan investment where most needed. The preparation of bankable projects is expected to help mobilise investments to finance water supply and sanitation projects in the 16 district capitals to improve the lives and living conditions of residents.

October 2007 - The Government of Egypt received a €1.9 million grant to finance a study that will look at technically feasible and economically and socially viable solutions for efficient water control and system management to reduce water shortages and water-logging in the two canal systems. The implementation of recommendations and solutions as a result of the study are expected to result in an increased volume of water and area of irrigable land, along with solutions for efficient water control and system management, and irrigation infrastructure and management.

November 2009 - The Government of Egypt received a €1.4 million grant to finance a study meant to assess and design improvements of major Egyptian hydraulic facilities and contribute to the implementation of Egypt’s Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) plan. The IWRM plan aims at improving water distribution and allocation efficiency and reducing the risks of flooding and damage to life and property in case of the failure of hydraulic control structures in the country.

November 2007 - The Government of Mozambique received a €1.2 million grant to undertake an irrigation project preparation study to enable the mobilization of funds for the development of 10,000 hectares of irrigated farmland. Sugar cane has been proposed in the pre-feasibility study as the main crop to be grown in the area to supply cane for sugar/ethanol production.

April 2013 – The Government of Senegal received a € 1.3 million grant to increase access to latrines for the poor, establish an affordable waste collection and transportation throughout the city, establish a private and / or community -driven waste treatment and reuse service, and to supply Casamance and the four main urban centers of the area with documents to seek funding for bankable projects. The project will help reduce CO2 emissions and improve the management of water resources to reduce water stress.

January 2009 - The Government of Ethiopia received a €2 million grant to promote and pilot the use of solar and wind energy for water pumping in rural areas of Ethiopia, and initiate development of a long-term investment in these technologies under the Universal Access Programme (UAP) where they are appropriate and most suitable. The project is expected to result in an increased and sustained supply of water at lower financial, economic, environmental and social costs than with fossil fuel powered pumping systems for rural water supply in Ethiopia.

May 2009 - The Government of Swaziland received a € 910,000 grant to carry out the preparatory work necessary for the implementation of the Lower Usuthu Smallholder Irrigation Project (LUSIP)-Phase II. This entails the preparation of the feasibility studies, detailed designs and tender documents required for the implementation of the LUSIP II infrastructure investments, as well as the mobilisation of funds required for the implementation of LUSIP II infrastructure investments.
