Bankable Project & Development Programme

June 2009- The Government of Gabon received a €1,6 million grant to improve the quality of life in the river basins of Gué-Gué, Lowé-IAE and Terre Nouvelle by putting in place the necessary conditions for the realization of the storm water drainage facilities which in turn will help reduce incidences of waterborne diseases, flooding and poverty in general. Through this project, the Government will have the necessary documents for mobilizing the funds required to implement the infrastructure investments: feasibility study reports, detailed designs and tender documents.

November 2007 - The Arusha Municipal Council received a €654,000 grant to formulate a Strategic Sanitation Plan Development intended to close the sanitation services and investment gaps by providing the Council and its partner -the Arusha Urban Water and Sewerage Authority - with guidance for the continuous improvement of sanitation in Arusha on an incremental basis, based on the principles of dynamic financial planning which matches developments to available funding.

December 2013 – The Government of Niger received €1.2 million to develop its IWRM plan for the entire country in order to improve the use of water resources and promote green and sustainable socio-economic development. The AWF is supporting the preparation of the IWRM plan, including an environmental and social impact and management assessments, as well as helping to ensure the mobilisation of resources for the implementation of the plan.

January 2008 - The Government of Liberia received a €1.5 million grant to develop plans for the rehabilitation and expansion of water supply and sanitation systems to meet 2025 demands in Monrovia and 3 county capitals (Kakata, Zwedru, and Buchaman). This project also includes the preparation of economically and technically sound priority projects to facilitate the process of mobilising the necessary investments downstream.

October 2014- the Hadejia-Jama'are-Komadugu-Yobe Basin Trust Fund  has received a €2 million grant to prepare a strategic action plan to develop water resources in the Komadugu-Yobe basin in Northern Nigeria. The plan will address fundamental water resources management issues that are preventing increasing water needs in the region from being met. Over 15 million people depend on the basin and stand to benefit from this project, particularly farmers, pastoralists and fishermen.

December 2009- The African Union Commission (AUC) received at € 1.2 million grant to finance the establishment of a strategic intervention framework for the development of regional and continental transboundary hydraulic infrastructure, based on a common development vision and sector policies; and for the establishment of an investment programme for transboundary hydraulic infrastructure around priorities defined by the basin organisations and regional economic organisations.

November 2014- The Government of Somalia has received a €3-million grant to support a project designed to build resilience to climate change and reduce water stress in Somaliland. The AWF grant will support the preparation of a water resources management and investment plan.

April 2008 - The Government of Seychelles received a €955,000 grant to formulate a water supply development plan for the three main Islands of Seychelles to attract the necessary water project investments to meet demands up to the year 2030. This should help improve the performance and service delivery of the water and sewerage division of the Public Utility Corporation (PUC) and improve demand-side management to reduce water usage. The project will boost water security to supply the need of the population, industry and tourism industry.

December 2013 - The Government of Malawi received a €1.8 million grant to help prepare a project to expand irrigated agriculture in the Lower Shire Valley. The project will help overcome the adverse effects of prolonged dry spells and frequent flooding, improve and spread agricultural production, as well as create employment opportunities through farming and irrigation ventures. The grant will be used to finance a feasibility study and preparatory activities to mobilize funding for an irrigation plan covering 21,000 hectares.

(In French only) Huit villes vont être dotées de plans d'investissement pour l'assainissement à Madagascar, grâce à un don de 1,8 million d’euros. L’objectif est de renforcer le développement économique et social de ces villes grâce à des programmes d’actions pour la gestion intégrée des eaux pluviales, des excreta, des eaux usées et des déchets solides. Les zones concernées (Toliara, Taolagnaro, Antsirabe, Toamasina, Nosy-Be, Fianarantsoa, Mahajanga et Antsiranana) regroupent 1,6 million d’habitants.
