Capacity building workshop on Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM)

The vision over the entire water cycle, as well as the reconsideration of the way water is used and waste water reused to address the growing urban water management challenges in Africa, is the motivation for the next capacity building event being organized by the African Water Facility (AWF) in collaboration with the Global Water Partnership (GWP) in Abidjan, from 25th to 28th January 2016.

GEOAQUIFER: Amélioration de la connaissance et de la gestion concertée du système Aquifère du Sahara septentrional (SASS) par l’utilisation des images satellitaires

(French Only) This 2010 case study discusses the results achieved  through the GEOAQUIFER project undertaken by the  Observatoire du Sahara et du Sahel (OSS) which consisted in assessing the water quantity and geographic coverage of aquifers located in the Northern Sahara region using satellite technology.

AWF Holds Talk on Hydro-Diplomacy at Stockholm Water Week

Cooperation and hydro-diplomacy in Africa will be at the top of AWF agenda during the 2013 edition of the Stockholm World Water Week
As part of the Africa Focus Day programme, the AWF will be bringing together a group of international water experts specialising in the management of water resources for a discussion on possible solutions for more effective pragmatic sharing of transboundary water resources on the African continent.

International monitoring and evaluation workshop held in Malawi to boost water sector performance

The African Water Facility (AWF), jointly with the Government of Malawi, organized a two-day international workshop on monitoring and information management with the support of the African Development Bank (AfDB).  Held in Lilongwe from 30th September to 1st October 2013, the event aimed at fostering peer learning among specialists and providing participants with tools and knowledge to better keep track of results achieved in the African water and sanitation sector.

World Water Week 2013 in Stockholm – Africa in the Limelight

Thousands of the world’s government representatives, water experts and industry leaders gathered in Stockholm from September 1-6, 2013 for World Water Week. With water cooperation on the agenda, participants have been discussing ways to foster greater collaboration between stakeholders to see that water remains at the top of the development agenda.

African Water Facility supports the development of Komadugu-Yobe Basin in Nigeria

Damaturu, Nigeria The African Water Facility announced on October 10, 2014, that it has offered the Hadejia-Jama'are-Komadugu-Yobe Basin Trust Fund a €2 million grant for the preparation of a strategic action plan to develop water resources in the Komadugu-Yobe basin in Northern Nigeria. Over 15 million people depend on the basin and stand to benefit from this project, particularly farmers, pastoralists and fishermen.

Ghana and Togo sign project agreement to bring drinking water to Lomé and Ghana’s coastal communities

The governments of Ghana and Togo signed on 12 December 2014 a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the construction of an African Water Facility -supported pipeline to bring drinking water from the lower Volta River in Ghana to the city of Lomé in Togo and the Ghanaian communities along the water transfer route. The AWF has offered a €1.4 million grant to Ghana to support the technical, legal and financial preparation of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project.

AWF to help tackle food insecurity, flooding and droughts in Uganda and South Sudan

The African Water Facility (AWF) announced on January 9, 2015 that it has offered a €1.97 million grant to the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP) to increase water availability for multiple purposes in the Nyimur region of Uganda and South Sudan. The grant will support the improvement of irrigated agriculture and food production, fisheries, electricity generation and sanitation as well as the prevention of flooding and droughts in the region.

Investment plans for sanitation in eight Malagasy cities

(In French only) La Facilité africaine de l’eau vient d’approuver un don de 1,8 million d’euros en faveur de Madagascar pour doter huit villes de plans d’assainissement. L’objectif du projet est de renforcer le développement économique et social de ces villes grâce à des programmes d’actions pour la gestion intégrée des eaux pluviales, des excreta, des eaux usées et des déchets solides. Les zones concernées (Toliara, Taolagnaro, Antsirabe, Toamasina, Nosy-Be, Fianarantsoa, Mahajanga et Antsiranana) regroupent 1,6 million d’habitants.
